Across Britain last night, people were asked to join in a round of applause for Mr Johnson, 55, as he spent a second night in intensive care in London suffering from coronavirus.

Sprotbrough man Kevin Cheadle was among those joining in, ending his round of applause from his home with a cry of “Boris!” and raising his arms aloft.

The round of applause echoes a weekly event showing support for the NHS with people gathering on their doorsteps, balconies and at windows at 8pm every Thursday to pledge support for the nation’s frontline heroes.

The PM was admitted to hospital on Sunday for precautionary checks and tests but was moved to intensive care at St Thomas’ Hospital after it was revealed that he had been using oxygen to breathe.
