That’s up from the seven days to October 18, when there were 1,095 cases – a rate of 351.1 per 100,000.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Doncaster now has the highest rate in Yorkshire, moving ahead of Barnsley, which is ranked 13th on the list with 525.8 cases and Rotherham (14th) with 512.4.

The spiralling figures come amid repeated warnings from local health chiefs for people to follow Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions.

Along with the rest of South Yorkshire, Doncaster is under the Government’s most severe Covid-19 restrictions and in the last week, Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust says it has been caring for more than 200 patients with Covid-19 in the area’s three hospitals – Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Worksop’s Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexborough Montagu Hospital.

Death rates are also continuing to rise, with more than 300 coronavirus deaths recorded in Doncaster since the pandemic began.

Doncaster’s director of public health, Dr Rupert Suckling, and local health bosses have made repeated warnings in recent days for people to follow the rules in a bid to control the rising rates.
