There have now been 213 deaths in the Doncaster area – the same as yesterday, according to newly released NHS figures.

Doncaster health bosses say they are continuing to win the fight over COVID-19 pandemic with more than 400 patients now allowed home after treatment.

Across the UK, England reported 46 new deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,221.

Patients were aged between 12 and 97 years old. Two patients, aged 65 and 85, had no known underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed.

Locally, in Sheffield there have been 284 deaths,the same as yesterday, while in Rotherham, there have been 185 deaths, an increase of one.

Barnsley has seen 137 deaths, the same figure as yesterday.

But the Office for National Statistics figures released earlier this week revealed that 47,387 people had died from the virus in England and Wales up to June 5.

And combined with the deaths reported in hospitals since then there have now been more than 53,000 deaths across the UK.

Earlier today, the four Chief Medical Officers made the recommendation of reducing the UK’s alert level from 4 to 3 in a joint statement, with coronavirus alert level 4 meaning "a Covid-19 epidemic is in general circulation; transmission is high or rising exponentially" to level 3 which is simply "a Covid-19 epidemic is in general circulation".

They reiterated that it does not mean the pandemic is over.
