Coronavirus: Sheffield Tesco puts security tags on soap in toilets to stop thieves

Jack Cutt, 19, spotted the tags when he went into the store in Sheffield to buy some spaghetti.

He said the tags, which cause an alarm to sound if they leave the shop doors, were fixed around the top of the soap dispensers in the loos on Tuesday.

Jack said the wall-mounted soap dispensers were empty - and he suspected the contents had been stolen.

He said: "I thought the security tags were excessive.

"But I do believe they are necessary currently so that everyone has a chance to wash their hands .

"I could not believe that all of this was caused by a few people who panicked bought and decided it was ok to be selfish and hoard all the soap for themselves.

"There were soap dispensers in the bathroom however they both had 'out of order' signs on them - I am guessing they had been broken into and soap stolen!"

He has recently started his own company which sells items online such as retro video games and consoles.

He added: "I recently saw a large increase in sales - maybe because of people going into self isolation."

Tesco has been contacted for comment.

There have been several incidents at Sheffield stores in recent days related to the coronavirus crisis.

One market stall was blasted for selling hand sanitiser at £9 a bottle while a Spar was selling individual toilet rolls for £1 each.
