Coronavirus: Doncaster Sheffield Airport could close 'within weeks' without government help

UK airports – including Doncaster Sheffield Airport – could close “within weeks without government intervention”, according to the Airport Operators Association.

The trade body's chief executive Karen Dee said: "Governments across the world are supporting their national aviation industries, as many parts of the global travel industry have come to a halt.

"As some airlines call on the UK Government to act similarly, we are clear that airports will shut down in weeks unless urgent action is taken to support the industry."

It called on the government to implement a series of measures to help the aviation industry, including providing emergency financing, suspending business rates and other central and local government rates and taxes on airports.

Air passengers flying out of Doncaster Sheffield Airport have been told to expect disruption to travel after flights were cancelled due to coronavirus.

The government has also been warned the hospitality sector is facing ruin unless financial support is provided.
