Coronavirus death toll increases by 10 in Doncaster and South Yorkshire

Figures released by NHS England show two more people in Doncaster who tested postive for the disease had died in the 24 hours to 4pm on Tuesday, January 12, bringing the total coronavirus-related fatalities to 629.

In Sheffield, there were also six additional deaths bringing the death tally to 667, and in Barnsley there have now been 469 deaths after two more were recorded.

There were no further deaths recorded in Rotherham, where the death toll remains at 466.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

Nationally, a further 1,564 people died by that measure - the biggest figure reported in a single day since the pandemic began.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

The figures for the latest reporting period show there were nine such deaths in England.

According to Government data, a total of two patients across all settings in Doncaster have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 up to Wednesday, January 13.

Separate Office for National Statistics data shows there have been a total of 657 deaths recorded in Doncaster where the death certificate mentioned Covid-19 as one of the causes up to January 1, the latest data available.
