Earlier today, Transport Minister Grant Shapps dashed summer holiday hopes when he warned that travel restrictions may not be lifted for months.

Speaking on Sky News, he cast doubt on both foreign travel and staycations in the UK.

He said: “The truth is we just don’t know how the virus will respond to both to the vaccines and of course how people will respond.

“I’m afraid I can’t give you a definitive, will there or will there not be the opportunity to take holidays this next year either at home or abroad.”

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, he said travelling abroad would depend on ‘everybody having their vaccinations’ in the UK – and potentially abroad’.

New measures to enforce Covid-19 restrictions are set to be implemented on Monday.

Travellers entering the UK from so-called ‘red list’ countries must spent 10 days in isolation in quarantine hotels.

Ten year prison sentences and fines of up to £10,000 will be issued for those who breach the rules.

The current lockdown is set to be reviewed on February 15, with a ‘road map’ route out of it expected to be announced the following week.
