Highfield Qualifications, which carry out training and issue first aid and lifeguard certificates along with facilitating apprenticeships and educational courses, have laid off a number of staff due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A former staff member claimed the firm had let go 50 members of staff. A spokesman for the firm said this figure was inaccurate but refused to say how many had their employment terminated when asked.

They cover multiple sectors such as retail, health and social care, finance, customer service, rail and engineering, hospitality, logistics and aviation.

A spokesman said: “Like many organisations across the country, Highfield has unfortunately had to make some difficult decisions in relation to a small number of employees – and certainly not the numbers quoted - as a result of the adverse effects relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We continue to work hard serving our valued customers and following the recommended guidelines and regulations. The majority of our team are working from home with further numbers deciding to take advantage of the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
