Isle book-nic is a success

Mums and dads joined their children for a special event at Westwoodside C of E Primary Academy that combined reading with picnicking.

The ‘book-nic’ was run straight after school and involved many fun activities for parents and children to do together.

Along with book-themed fun there were activities such as hair braiding, face painting, musical instruments to try out and various crafts going on.

The event was linked to the highly successful Imagination Library that runs within school.

Tots are involved in book chatter sessions as part of the Library initiative and different activities for children throughout the school take place on a regular basis.

Pupils also enjoyed a free workshop provided by the Northern Ballet, Leeds as part of their Outreach Programme recently.

Sam Carruthers, a great dancer and enthusiastic teacher led a themed dance session for both nursery and reception classes. Children were invited to put on their own imaginary dancing shoes and move in creative ways to explore the ‘Elves and the Shoemaker’ story.

The children spent 45 minutes dancing and moving in explorative ways and their high levels of interest and creativity were commented on by their tutor for the day.

The school enjoys a broad and balanced curriculum and so welcomes a veriety of creative and inspirational visitors and workshops for pupils within school.
