Fears for Doncaster jobs as Direct Line set to axe 800 jobs across UK

There are fears for jobs in Doncaster after it emerged insurance firm Direct Line is set to axe 800 workers across the UK.

Around seven per cent of the companies 11,000 workforce will be affected by the job cuts as the company seeks to adapt to changes in consumer behaviour, following a digital shift among customers.

Direct Line has a site at the Lakeside Boulevard in Doncaster. It is unknown how many staff are employed there.

A spokesperson for the company told the Free Press they will announce the sites due to close later today (Wednesday, 26 February).

It has been reported that one of the company’s sites is understood to have been earmarked for closure in 2022, while another is to be significantly downsized.

DIrect Line also owns the Churchill and Green Flag brands.

Last year, chief executive Penny James told investors the business needed to make £60 million in savings.
