O' Donegans owner Chris Coiughlan said he instantly recognised the star when he arrived at the pub on Hall Gate.

Mark is best known for his fearsome stature on The Chase, where he looms over contestants from his podium - and even storms off and punches the set when he's beaten.

"We were all a bit shocked, said Chris.

“We were doing the quiz as normal. Capital FM DJ Danny Oates does it every Thursday. It’s packed every week and was really busy.

“I looked across the road and who’s getting out of a 4x4?

“It was the Beast!

“I couldn’t believe it.

“He came straight in and I said: ”It’s Mark isn’t it?”

“He said: “I’ve heard a lot of good things about this place, I want to see what’s going on.

"So I took him in, he sat down , had a pizza played the quiz, and then on the way out he said it was brilliant - one of the best quizzes he had been to.”

Chris was mystified by the visit: “Nobody had a clue why he came, I think he’d just heard about the quiz and wanted to see it for himself.

“He just played two rounds of the quiz and did really well .

“He sat there for an hour and a half had a pizza and said he had really enjoyed it.”
