Stores across town saw a rush of customers following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Monday night announcement of a new shutdown which is expected to last until at least mid-February.

The bread and meat aisles at Sainsbury’s in Edenthorpe were empty while shoppers also targeted items such as toilet rolls, pasta, rice, eggs and fresh fruit and vegetables.

However, the shortages were not as bad as during the first lockdown in March and customers have been urged not to horde food.

It comes after all the major supermarkets reported problems with their website ordering services yesterday as customers rushed to stock up, with some crashing and delivery slots rapidly filling up.

People have been urged not to panic buy and shop sensibly, with only essential shops open for business during the latest lockdown.
