Builder in line for safety award

Community regeneration specialist Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) has been shortlisted for the Workplace of the Year Award for Construction at the inaugural St John Ambulance First Aid Awards.

The winners will be revealed at a celebratory dinner in London next week hosted by BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth.

High-profile supporters will present the accolades including TV presenter Matthew Wright who would have choked to death without first aid.

He will be joined by wilderness survival expert Ray Mears who gave first aid to a fellow crew member involved in a helicopter accident during filming.

FHM employs 469 staff, 86 of whom have first aid at work qualifications and 46 have emergency first aid training.

The company regularly gives health and safety talks at schools neighbouring its sites to ensure children understand the dangers of entering construction sites.

Its residential liaison officers also give health and safety talks to tenants and members of the public at community events.

Sue Killen, CEO of St John Ambulance, said: ‘Organisations like Frank Haslam Milan are the reason we set up the St John Ambulance First Aid Awards.

“We were searching for companies that had gone the extra mile or achieved something special through first aid.

“Their application showed they took first aid provision extremely seriously and I look forward to meeting them on the evening and toasting their commitment.”

According to St John Ambulance, up to 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to survive

The organisation wants to put an end to these needless deaths and encourage everyone to have the skills to save a life.

These awards aim to raise awareness of the importance of first aid and celebrate organisations with exemplary first aid standards in their workplaces and those who have put their knowledge to use.
