Doncaster Ramblers - Brian's Bonus Walk

Communication channels clearly worked well as 28 ramblers met on Carr Lane and set off in the direction of Wadworth, visible on the horizon. The walk was an eye opener for many as we walked past the new Amazon building and neighbouring lakes leading to the developing I-Port. Coffee was enjoyed as we approached Loversall and began the only real ascent of the day up into Wadworth. Branching left, we approached the site of Rossington Main Colliery where a massive regeneration programme is underway. Although clarty, we climbed over the remains of the pit tip which afforded surprisingly expansive views over Rossington and back towards the Amazon building. Reaching Rossington, we were offered the choice of a cafe or pub for refreshments before heading off on the short 2 mile stretch back along the cycleway to Warren Lane and our start point. Although muddy for much of the way, this didn’t detract from what was a very interesting perspective of the major changes taking place on the edge of our town with the criss - crossing over and under rail and road links to add interest. Thanks again, Brian, for a well worthwhile day out and to Bob for the usual, nonchalant backmarking.

The Route

Start immediately by crossing the first of several railway lines on this walk, not surprising as the area has a long association with the railways. Continue along the footpath, with shrubs on both sides, to a large footbridge, crossing more railway lines, and remain on the footpath ahead, with the roar of the motorway to the left, and the tranquillity of Potteric Carr on the right. Part of the land here has been drained to encourage the Bittern to breed. Stay on the path as it zig-zags left right left through the underpass and emerge with the massive Amazon warehouse ahead The footpath continues down the side of the building, as you try to imagine the environment inside. Shortly the route takes you across another railway line, and down a newly tarmaced walkway, although much of the surrounding area still resembles a building site. In five years it may well be a local beauty spot. Head towards a farmhouse visible on the right, and at a field boundary turn left onto Rake’s Lane. This takes you first passed farm buildings, directly into Loversall, with its Grade II listed Church of St Katherine. Follow the path left then right around Loversall Hall estate until reaching the link road. Here turn left and head down the A60 up Wadworth Hill, using the pavement, but taking care when crossing the road.

In Wadworth, just passed the White Hart, turn left down Carr Lane and continue in this direction crossing first the motorway, then the railway (again). Ignoring path on the right, and continue ahead until reaching the black hill of Rossington Main Colliery Spoil Heap. The Pit remained operational from the early 1900’s until 2007 and the site is now being redeveloped for housing.

Those with a sense of adventure can yomp up the slag heap for extensive views of the area, otherwise fork right after crossing the River Torne and follow path behind farm and Burial Ground. Either route brings you out just beyond the cemetery, where a bridleway leads directly into Rossington. Continue on this road passing a water tower, schools, social clubs, pub, supermarket, swimming pool, until reaching a T junction and then turn right. Just beyond the level crossing turn left at a waymarker, into a housing estate. Turn left at road junction and head north out of the estate. Continue in this direction until reaching the River Torne, cross and turn left then shortly after right though underpass (railway) and another (motorway). Just beyond the motorway turn right and follow path passed houses until reaching a T junction turn left. Continue to the level crossing and into the housing estate. Take the first left then follow the road round to the start. Route is approximately 10 miles
