5 of the best breweries in Sheffield

As the UK's real ale capital, it's hardly surprising that Sheffield is home to some of the country's most talented and inventive brewers. Drinkers keen to get a taste of the city's ale scene should get more intimate with these five breweries. Kelham Island Brewery Since it opened in 1990 - well ahead of the real ale resurgence - the Kelham Island Brewery has become a pilgrimage site for ale drinkers in the Sheffield area. The institution is now the oldest brewery still operating in Sheffield Where to try? The brewery itself was opened in the beer garden of the Fat Cat pub 28-years ago - and the Kelham Island pub remains the best place to sample their tried and tested ales. Unfortunately the brewery's other pub the Tap and Tankard on Cambridge Street shut earlier this month. What to try? There is something for everyone. We recommend a pint of Pale Rider for those who prefer lighter ales, or the strong and hoppy Kelham Best if darker beer is your preference. They operate from premises on Aizlewood Road, just off Abbeydale Road. Where to try? The centrally located and laid-back Devonshire Cat is a reliable provider of the brewery's established, and latest concoctions - as is the Rising Sun on the city's outskirts. What to try? Moonshine is a pleasant smooth golden ale that can be found in a number of Sheffield pubs. Try Daily Bread if you prefer a maltier beer. They wrote themselves into ale-soaked history books when they brewed Sheffield's first ever Pilsner. Where to try? The brewery's flagship pub is the Horse and Jockey on Wadsley Lane which serves up Stancill's full arsenal of brews. What to try? A pint of Barnsley Bitter is essential for any self-respecting beer fan, while the Stancill Pilsner is a unique take on the Czech drink. Where to try? Exit 33 run their very own pub just north of the River Don and near Kelham Island. The Harlequin serves up the brewery's full repertoire of ales. What to try? Thirst Aid lives up to its name and delivers a thirst quenching golden ale characterised with tropical flavours. Their Oat Stout is also well worth a taste, delivering hints of coffee and molasses. Sentinel brew an array of exciting British, European and American style beers, using top quality ingredients. Where to try? Located on Shoreham Street near the city's train station, Sentinel's Brewery is unsurprisingly the best place to sample their latest brews. Delicious food, including a fantastic chip butty, accompanies their tasty range of drinks. What to try? If you're after a local taste try their malty Sheffield Best Bitter.
