IT'S an exciting time for Harworth girl Lindsey Kelk whose debut novel looks set to be a summer hit.
Billed as "Sex and the City for the younger generation", I Heart New York hits the shelves today in perfect time for women looking for some light reading for the beach.

And if being given a three-book deal at the age of 26 was not enough, Lindsey is also preparing to move to New York, in an adventure
remarkably similar to the heroine of her novel, to work as an editor of children's books.

On top of this, she added, she is in discussions about turning the book into a film.

Lindsey said: "I'm really excited about the book. It's all a bit weird and crazy. Because I work in publishing, it doesn't seem real. "I just want to write. I'm not trying to write a great American novel. I just want people to enjoy it and I hope it's fun."

The book is the first in a series of three novels centred around the
life of shoe-obsessed Angela Clark, who moves to New York after fleeing from her cheating boyfriend in England.

Lindsey, whose mother and father live in Harworth and Fishlake, said she started writing at the age of six when she had "read all the books in her room and decided the only course of action was to write a new one."

She went to school at Serlby Park in Bircotes before moving to Nottingham Trent University to study English and creative writing.

"Harworth was a great place to live when I was younger," Lindsey said, "I feel nostalgic when I go back.

"And shopping is so much better in Doncaster. Now there's a massive Topshop."

From Nottingham, Lindsey moved to London working in PR before landing her job as a senior editor at HarperCollins where she has worked as a ghost writer for American celebrities Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Her employers HarperCollins agreed to publish her book after it was turned down by numerous agents.

"If you don't know how hard it is to keep plugging away, you are optimistic as a writer," Lindsey said, "When you are inside the machine you see great books being turned down.

"But I would love to be able to write more."

The release of I Heart New York will be followed by books set in Hollywood and Paris.
