South Parade’s Salutation is celebrating after being named the regional Pub of the Year by CAMRA and landlady Gayle Bee says it’s one of the best days of her life!

“It’s a very proud moment,” she told the Free Press. “CAMRA does so much for real ale and for pubs that it’s very special to have been honoured by them. The members are very discerning drinkers, if they give you the thumbs up, you know you must be doing something right.”

She added that the secret of her success is putting customers first.

“A building’s just a building,” she said. “You have to make it into a pub, and you need great staff and great customers to do that – luckily I’ve got both.”

The Sal has Black Sheep as its static beer, with a revolving selection of five other beers – but the guest beers can change very quickly!

Gayle added: “We finished a barrel of Landlord in 45 minutes once, and a barrel of Snecklifter lasted an hour!”
