Experience Caribbean carnival in North Lincolnshire

North Lincolnshire is set to host a three day Caribbean Carnival Arts Weekend: Jump Up and Play Mas, from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 September 2017.

The carnival is coming to North Lincolnshire with Caribbean music and the latest carnival dance moves and costumes.

Get involved in the carnival weekend and see a range of beautifully crafted, colourful Caribbean carnival head dresses and costumes displayed throughout 20-21 Visual Arts Centre from 26 to 30 September.

Join in the Jump Up and Play Mas activities throughout the weekend on:

Thursday 28 September

10.30am to 12 noon – Stick and Splodge Carnival Play at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. It costs £1. Get creative through making and moving to the colours and sounds of the Caribbean in this vibrant carnival play session. No need to book, just turn up. It is suitable for children aged five and under.

1.30pm to 2.30pm – Chair-based Soca Dance Class at Scunthorpe Wellbeing Hub, Alvingham Road. It costs £2. Join in a dance class like no other. Chair Soca is a fun and exhilarating session getting people moving to uplifting sounds of the Caribbean Soca music and offers a true sense of carnival. Friday 29 September

School carnival dance workshops will take place throughout the day.

6pm to 7.30pm – Carnival ‘Jump Up’ dance workshop for young people aged eight to 19 at Outwood Academy Foxhills, Scunthorpe. It is free to take part. The session will be one to remember as carnival dance artists from across the region join to deliver a one-off dance experience. Learn to move to the Caribbean carnival rhythms and sounds in this fun and infectious dance workshop. You won’t want to stop! No need to book, just turn up.

Saturday 30 September

10am to 1pm – Caribbean carnival costume masterclass at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. It costs £8. Local artists and arts students are invited to join experience and award-winning carnival costume makers for a hands-on, practical and creative session. You will learn carnival crafts, using techniques and materials seen on costumes at East Midlands Caribbean Carnivals as well as Leeds West Indian Carnival and Notting Hill Carnival. 2pm to 4pm – Family Carnival Arts Mas Camp drop in at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. It is £1 for adults and free for children. Pop into the centre for your chance to experience carnival making in a fun, friendly and creative environment with an open session led by experienced carnival artists. Create something beautiful that you can keep forever – a carnival head, dress, cuffs or feathered collar. What you make is up to you! No need to book, just turn up.

The carnival experience is in partnership with East Midlands Caribbean Arts Network (EMCCAN) and their Caribbean carnival tour ‘Taking Flight’ supported with funding from Arts Council England Strategic Touring Fund.
