Right Up Our Street and DN7 Festival are putting up the bunting and blowing up the balloons as they ready themselves to celebrate the home coming of Sally Jenkinson at the Hatfield Open Mic Night at the Hatfields pub next Thursday, March 27.

Having grown up in Wheatley, Balby and Sprotbrough, Hexthorpe-born Sally is back on home-turf fresh from Adelaide Fringe Festival where she earned impressive reviews for her show Folly, a piece of spoken word with a fully scored guitar accompaniment.

Performances closer to home have included renowned UK festivals Womad, Secret Garden Party and Cheltenham Poetry Festival.

Sally’s debut collection of poems, Sweat-borne Secrets, was published in 2012 and whilst, more recently, she was awarded the Poetry Can South West Award for Poet of the Year 2012-2013 at Bristol Poetry Festival.

Returning back to her native South Yorkshire to read a selection of her poems at Hatfield Open Mic Night, Sally is the daughter of Mick Jenkinson who will be familiar to many in connection with Doncaster Folk Festival. Sally cites her family as a major influence in her work which includes the themes of ‘home’ and roots, describing them as “a big, noisy family and I’m always learning from them”.

Commenting on her appearance in the region Sally said: “I’m so excited about reading my work in Doncaster but at the same time I am quite nervous. Everywhere else I can charm people by having a Yorkshire accent, but back home everyone already talks like me!”

The Hatfield Open Mic night is a brand new series of gigs for local artists to perform alongside more established acts with audiences given the opportunity to enjoy great music, comedy and poetry. Open to first-time performers and more experienced ones alike, this friendly, laid-back evening welcomes all art forms including visual artists who display their work.

Performers and artists wanting to book a slot to appear on the same bill as Sally Jenkinson should contact Joe@rightupourstreet.org.uk.
