Today and tomorrow are your last chances to visit the excellent The Mallard – a Doncaster Thoroughbred exhibition at Doncaster Museum, Chequer Road. A celebration of world speed record holder Mallard, built in Doncaster in 1938, and the other A4 locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. Display includes nameplates from other famous A4s which sadly never survived such as Kingfisher and Silver King.
See Sir Nigel’s Boardroom Table on which the original designs and other papers would have been displayed. Rare artefacts from the Doncaster Grammar School Railway Collection are also included and never before seen in public! One of these is the original Royal Canadian Coat of Arms, borrowed by the National Railway Museum for the restoration of Dominion of Canada. Also on display are several letters and notebooks written by Gresley giving a rare insight into the man whose genius gave Doncaster a world speed record which has lasted 75 years. The museum is open fron 10am to 4.30pm and admission is free. For more details contact 01302 734287.
