Comic book characters sprang from the page into real life as hundreds gathered for the Yorkshire Cosplay Convention.

Around 2,000 people – mostly young and many dressed in costume – attended the event, organised by 24-year-old graphic designer Kathrine Furness, from Thurnscoe, Barnsley.

Batman villains, Ghostbusters, Spiderman and Star Wars were just some of the spectacular costumed characters strolling around.

Kathrine, who has put on smaller conventions in the past, said: “I am overwhelmed by the turnout. I just decided to advertise it wider and this has happened. I’ve been doing this for years but this is the biggest one yet.

“Most of the people here just like getting dressed up as their favourite comic characters. They can meet together with like-minded people. This started as a hobby for me when I was at school and loved Japanese comics and it has just got bigger.”

The event was at The Dome in Doncaster, where a stage was set up for performers, rooms were filled with trade stands and almost 50 traders did a roaring trade in Manga toys, hairpieces, collectables and comic books.
