Pupils from the Campsmount Academy travelled over 100 miles to take part in day one of a national performance event, the Rock Challenge.

The Rock Challenge aims to help young people enjoy school and live pro-active lives while steering clear of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

There are no similar events in South Yorkshire currently, so the Campsmount young people and staff made their way to the start of the 2015 Be Your Best Rock Challenge and J Rock in Carlisle.

Not only did they display their work and talent to an audience from across the country, they also came away with an award - the West Cumbria Community Safety Partnership Award of Excellence.

The accolade was for their very high standard of performance skill, but Campsmount also took all three technical awards in lighting, stage crew and video performance, seen as an impressive achievement.

It is the second year that Campsmount has been involved with Rock Challenge.

The students created a powerful and atmospheric piece entitled ‘Effects that manifest’.

Their performance was inspired by the 1981 Chris Van Allsburg fantasy children’s picture book and the 1995 film of the same name.

Lord lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman said: “The children have to be so committed.

“The winners were just inspiring. They were all brilliant!”
