NOVEMBER marks a busy month for a operatic society with a show-stopping production and an appeal for auditionees.

The Doncaster Amateur Operatic Society (DAOS) is looking for two sets of children to play the Von Trapp youngsters in their version of ‘The Sound of Music’.

Better still, the successful cast will be performing the musical - based on a true story about a young novice nun who becomes the governess for seven children of a widower Captain Von Trapp - at Doncaster’s new performance venue next October.

The production team wants children between the ages of six and 16 to play Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt, Martha and Gretl. There is also the part of 17-year-old boy Rolf.

A DAOS spokesman said: “As you can imagine we are all excited about performing in the new theatre and hope that the public will show their support by buying tickets to see this family favourite.”

Audtions take place at the end of November. Call the DAOS director Ian Coley on 07885 351519.

Rehearsals are expected to start in February or March.

The DAOS is also gearing up to perform a new musical called ‘Ruth’ at Doncaster Minster at the end of the month.

The musical, penned by Welsh songwriter Leslie Cass - the brother of Ronald Cass who wrote ‘Summer Holiday’ and ‘The Young Ones’ - is based on the biblical story of Ruth.

It includes a selection of music such as Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Trouble Water’, ‘Raise Your Voice’ from the musical Sister Act and a selection from ‘The Sound Of Music’.

The performance will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 7.30pm.

Tickets are just £10 for adults, £8 concessions and children under the age of ten are free.
