SHOW-stopping students at a Doncaster school are set to have a brush with fame - by tackling hit musical Hairspray.

Youngsters at Balby Carr Community Sports and Science College will be taking to the stage for three days this week to present the acclaimed West End show.

Set in 1960s America, the show is based around energetic Tracy Turnblad, a small town girl with big hair, big ambitions and a big heart.

Tracy wins a chance to dance on local TV talent show The Corny Collins Show, and overnight is transformed from outsider into ‘Miss I Want To Be Her’.

Taking on the key roles are Year 7 student Melissa Welch, who will be starring as Tracy, and Year 11 pupil Joel Best who will be starring as Corney Collins.

Rosie Edson, from the school’s drama department, said: “We hope lots of people come along to help our staff and students welcoming the return of the 1960s.

“Can Tracy lead 1960s America in changing attitudes, win the heart of the popular Link Larkin and maintain her spot on The Corny Collins Show, ridding the TV programme of its reigning queen?

“Come to the show to find out!”

The show, based on the 1988 John Waters film, runs from tomorrow until Friday.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with the show starting at 7pm.

The musical’s original Broadway production opened in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards out of 13 nominations. It ran for over 2,500 performances and closed in 2009.

The show has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions, and was adapted as a 2007

n Tickets are priced £2.50 and are available from the school’s main reception on 0845 345 1629.
