Young athletes to compete in national finals

TWO of Doncaster Athletic Club's leading lights are heading for the English Schools Combined Events finals in September.

Outstanding track and field prospect Nicole Bewley will be part of the South Yorkshire junior girls Pentathlon team to travel to Bedford later this year after a sensational performance in the North East qualifying championships in Jarrow.

She will be joined by octathlete Liam Ramsay who beat off competition from West Yorkshire's Jacob Gardiner to land a place in the intermediate boys national final.

Bewley was in irresistible form in the pentathlon as first place finishes in the 75m hurdles, shot putt and high jump saw her race out in front in the competition and give her team an unassailable lead.

South Yorkshire finished 234 points ahead of second placed Durham to book their place in Bedford.

Ramsay finished 589 points ahead of his West Yorkshire challenger with wins in the 100m hurdles, high jump and 1,500m.

He will compete as an individual in September's finale.

DAC pentathlete Aiden Davies also came a respectable ninth out of 19 competitors in the junior boys event, recording personal bests in the shot putt and long jump.
