WOOD CLINCHES BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP
EDLINGTON woman Helen Wood has been crowned as the All England Indoor Bowls champion, writes Joanna McLister.
Helen, 37, beat off stiff competition from international Val Bradley to take the Disabled Sport England title 7-4 in a tense final at Solihull, West Midlands.
She said: "Although it was tight I just remained confident that I could win and take the title.
"It was fantastic to be handed the trophy and I received huge support from members of the Doncaster Indoor Bowls Club. "
Securing her place by winning the regional final in Leeds last November, Helen also helped Yorkshire to finish runners up in the team category.
She added: "Everyone was very welcoming and there was a great atmosphere at the finals.
"I've been playing bowls for about nine years and will hopefully be entering more competitions in the future."
Wheelchair-bound Helen suffers from dystonia, a condition which affects the left side of her body.
But she has not allowed it to affect her progress in the sport and was also presented with the DSE's Most Promising Senior Newcomer Award earlier this year.
