DONCASTER took the sting out of Rochdale Hornets for a second successive weekend to stay top of Co-operative Championship One.

Tony Miller's side had much the better of the first half during which they ran in five tries to gain the initiative.

The Dons also survived a brief Rochdale fightback at the beginning of the second period to continue their impressive start to the campaign.

It took just seven minutes for Doncaster to break the deadlock when the ball was shifted to the right for Dean Colton to crash over the line.

Dale Bloomfield touched down in the corner to level for the visitors but tries from Russ Spiers, Colton, Kyle Kesik and Craig Fawcett gave the hosts a 26-4 lead at the break.

Doncaster started the second period in sloppy fashion and three quick-fire tries from Bloomfield, Dean Gorton and Paul O'Connor reduced the deficit to six points.

But Chris Spurr, Mick Butterfield and then Fawcett all touched down in the same right corner to settle the contest.

Chris Baines scored a late Rochdale consolation but the Dons had the final say when Tom Hodson, who kicked six goals, went over after latching onto Paul Cooke's perfect pass.
