BRETT Davey says the Knights must come out of the blocks flying after the RFU finalised changes to the Championship play-offs, writes Liam Hoden.

From next season only the top four sides will enter the promotion play-offs, while the club who finishes bottom will be relegated, rather than the bottom four playing off to avoid the drop.

Director of rugby Davey said: “It’s going to prevent sides from resting on their laurels too much.

“You can’t win a few games and know you’ll be in the play-offs.

“We’ll have to shoot out of the blocks and be there or there abouts from the off.

“It’s going to make the division a lot more competitive because you’ll have more to play for.”

Davey believes if the Knights can replicate their start from last season they will be well placed for a play-off push.

He said: “We lost the first two games but our form after that was really good and we were up in the right areas.

“Injuries cost us a lot towards the second half of the season but that’s been something we’ve tried to address in the recruiting we’ve done.

“We had no cover in some areas, Chris Hallam for example was playing for weeks with injury.

“But we’ve now got three scrum halves in the squad and we’ll have the cover to call on.”

The Free Press understands Davey is one final addition away from completing his initial squad for next season.

Second row Royce Cadman was the latest new arrival.

The 14 retained players from last season have been joined by 17 new additions so far.
