Gemma French will have an extra special reason to celebrate her 28th birthday on Monday because it will also mark 20 years of playing rugby at club and county level.
Doncaster Demons’ captain fell in love with the sport at the tender age of eight and has not looked back since, having also represented Doncaster and Toll Bar ARLFC, Doncaster Ladies and Mosbrough Ladies at union level. She is also a dual code player currently representing Featherstone Rovers having previously played rugby league for Wakefield Townville Panthers.
French has been a county regular and progressed to England trials over her two decades in rugby.
She is Doncaster’s highest points scorer.
“I was introduced to the sport through school at the age of eight and from then I became addicted to rugby,” she said. “I thrived off the adrenaline and the competitiveness of the game. As I got older, it was more about learning the tactics and strategy, the buzz I get from playing rugby and the camaraderie on the field.
“After 20 years of playing rugby it still feels great! It feels like I am at home when I’m on the pitch.”
Demons start their new season on Sunday at home to Littleworth Ladies.
