Doncaster Knights’ confidence going into Sunday’s Championship derby against Rotherham has not been affected by their B&I Cup defeat to Jersey.

So claimed hooker Ben Hunter, who quickly distanced himself from the ‘unlucky 13’ tag this week.

“I’m not superstitious; you make your own luck in life and we just came unstuck against Jersey,” he said.

“A few individual errors cost us and and they got in behind us on a couple of occasions which just wasn’t good enough and we know we should have done better.

“We were obviously disappointed to lose the game in the circumstances that we did because we had been confident before the game.

“But the mood is still positive and we just move on to the next game against Rotherham. The way we see it is that it was a kick up the backside.

“We’ve been on a great run but we knew it had to end sometime and although you are never happy when you lose any game, we’d prefer that to have happened last weekend rather than this given the Jersey game was a B&I Cup pool game and the other is an important league match.

“That’s not to say we aren’t taking the B&I Cup seriously. We finished top of our pool and we want to go as far as we can – hopefully one better than (beaten finalists) last season.

“But, as we’ve said all season, the league is our top priority and we’ve got a massive game on Sunday.

“They’ve had a bad spell of late, though they’ve had a lot of injuries, but we know they are a good side,” he added.

“Injuries always change the dynamics of a side and the fact they had four injured players returning last weekend will have given them a boost even though they lost at Leinster.

“We know they’ll be up for the game on Sunday.

“It will probably come down to who wants it more on the day. Hopefully that will be us because the last thing we want is to follow a defeat with another defeat and get into a downward spiral.”
