Director of rugby Clive Griffiths is warning Saturday’s opponents Blaydon to expect a Doncaster backlash, writes Pippa Field.
With eight wins and one loss this season, Doncaster sit top of the SSE National League One table - 16 points clear of the team they next visit.
Despite the gap, Blaydon have plenty to shout about as, after a difficult start to the season, they have now notched up five wins in as many games.
Their most recent win was over Henley Hawks – the only team this season to defeat Doncaster, who are without the injured Matt Clark and Dougie Flockhart on Saturday.
Despite their enforced absences, a bullish Griffiths backed his team to challenge Blaydon and build on last weekend’s 55-3 Tynedale win.
“It will be a tough game against Blaydon, they are on a winning run and they will be full of confidence,” said Griffiths.
“Let’s hope they are over-confident thinking they beat Henley who we lost to.
“It’s all psychology. If they beat us then they will have had to earn it. We have to just do what we can and not worry about other people and decisions that get taken out of our hands.
“We will be looking to get a result ourselves and keep our place at the top of the table. Obviously Matt Clark and Dougie Flockhart are unavailable to us.
“We will miss them, they are good players, but we can’t moan, we have to just get on with it.” We’ve played without Matt before and we know we have people to come in. With Doug out, we will juggle the back line about a little bit.”
And, while three points clear at the top of SSE National League One, Griffiths believes his team can step it up another gear once all fully fit.
“Unfortunately we have a few injuries and that has hindered our progress as a team,” he added.
“But it gives other players an opportunity to come in and show what they can do.
“We have a tough month coming up, but there’s still a long way to go this season and plenty of rugby to be played, it’s not just about one game.”
