WHEATLEY Hills blew the chance to make up ground on their rivals as they lost 24-5 at Driffield.
Hills, with up to three games in hand on some of the teams around them, were comfortable 20-14 home winners over the East Yorkshire side on the first day of the season.
But they could not live with a Driffield team who have moved away from the relegation zone with a number of impressive performances over recent weeks.
The hosts took the lead after six minutes with a penalty goal and scored the first try of the match when scrum half Chris Gray broke round the blind side.
Wheatley pulled back a try when No 8 Gareth Burns touched down from a rolling maul, but Ryan Richardson missed the conversion from halfway out and that was to prove their only score.
The second half was dominated by Driffield, although they were restricted to penalty goals as Wheatley pressured them into mistakes.
