Battling Doncaster failed to prevent Super League Widnes Vikings plundering the spoils (42-28) in last night’s Tetley’s Challenge Cup fourth round tie at the Stobart Stadium.

But the Championship strugglers made the seven-times winners work hard for their victory despite being without their Super League loan players and were still in the game until 10 minutes from time.

Their impressive start was rewarded on 13 minutes with loose-forward Mike Emmett dummying his way over for a try, converted by Sanderson.

Full-back Mick Butterfield added a second converted try four minutes later after reaching out of the tackle to score.

Widnes cut the deficit to 12-6 with a 24th minute converted try by centre Patrick Ah Van. The Vikings drew level on 31 minutes with a converted try by full-back Shaun Briscoe.

Vikings grabbed two converted tries in three minutes either side of the interval to open up a 24-12 lead.

Record try-scorer Lee Waterman lifted the Dons with a 47th converted try after Briscoe had fumbled Cooke’s kick.

Paddy Flynn’s 58th minute try saw Widnes open up a 12 point lead, which became just six five minutes later following Brett Waller’s converted try.

Widnes added three further tries against a late effort by Sanderson.
