Chief executive Carl Hall is due to meet caretaker coach Pete Green for further talks this week.

But those discussions were set to be centred around Green’s playing career rather than the vacant head coach’s position.

Green has led the Dons to back-to-back wins since temporarily taking the reins along with Rhys Lovegrove and Pete Bell following Gary Thornton’s exit.

But the Doncaster stalwart, whose last appearance in a Dons shirt came back in 2009, has impressed just as much on the pitch after including himself in the matchday squads.

Former assistant coach Green hopes to succeed Thornton but Hall is also keen to make sure the club continue to get the most out of his playing ability.

Speaking ahead of last weekend’s win over Keighley, Hall said: “I’ve spoken to Pete this week and we’ll sit down next week and have another chat because as an ex-player you’re a long time finished.

“Pete’s probably not played for 12 months too long for us and he’s still got plenty left in him. After watching that game [against Hemel] he’s got plenty more for the Dons.

“I know what the club means to him and I know he’s passionate about the club. He’s wanting a future here in coaching and he’ll no doubt have some questions for me - like ‘if I play will it affect my coaching?’

“Well, Pete Green - as well as Ray and the family - are Dons through and through so you need to look after people like that.

“Like I say, he was impressive. I know he has playing for Toll Bar but I didn’t expect him to be as good as he was at the weekend [against Hemel]. He was keen and eager and really wanting to do well for the club.

“And like I think what he’s told the boys, he wanted to back up what he’s been saying during the season.

“I’ll sit down with him and we’ll decide which direction we go. But Pete’s got no fears that he doesn’t play a big part in our club.”

Doncaster are fourth in the League One standings. They are without a game this weekend.
