Epworth Ladies Netball Club got their season underway, but suffered a 19-12 defeat to Hallcross Heroes.
Both sides seemingly struggled because of the windy conditions during the Doncaster and District encounter with Epworth adapting their game plan to make best use of the blustery weather.
Captain Cheryl Atkinson at goal defence had to keep her wits about her with a tricky opposite number but defended consistently throughout.
Making a welcome return was long-standing goalkeeper Lynne Shackleton and both wing defence players Chelsea Croxall and Dawn Leggott offered solid support to make some superb interceptions.
Taking control of the centre and attacking thirds were seasoned players Sophie Leggott and Cassie Ellis playing at wing attack and centre respectively.
Goal shooter Kay Kiddle and goal attack Lauren Kiddle faced an experienced Hallcross defence who used the conditions to their advantage forcing Epworth into long shots.
Heroes led Epworth 5-3 after the first quarter before Epworth came back in the second to 7-6.
However, Hallcross took the third 13-10 before claiming a 19-12 victory.
Lauren Kiddle was voted player of the match.
Epworth’s Dawn Leggott was also congratulated for making her competitive debut after years of watching her daughters come through the junior ranks.
Darryl Pidd took top spot at the Isle of Axholme Golf Society’s latest 18-round competition.
Pidd scored 31 points, with Robert Andrew in second with 29 points and Steve Green in third with 27.
Andrew was also nearest to the pin on hole 16 with Andrew Cronshaw the winner at hole six.
Cronshaw had a day to remember, claiming the longest drive on hole 10.
The team of the day was Green, Pidd, Mark Clayton and Derek Johnson with an average score of 28 points.
The next meeting takes place at Shirland Course, Alfreton, on Sunday, May 12, 11am. Call Tom Sanders on 01724 712089.
