IT was back to work as a plasterer today for European boxing champion Jamie McDonnell after successfully defending his title in a gruelling battle at the Dome.
McDonnell retained his bantamweight crown by outpointing Belgian star Stephane Jamoye with a performance described as "world class" by top promoter Frank Maloney.
Maloney is hoping to put the 24-year-old Hatfield man forward as a world title challenger later in the year if he continues to progress.
McDonnell told the Free Press it was "the fear of losing" that drove him on in an extraordinary toe-to-toe finish at the end of the bout.
He became engaged to his long time girlfriend Rachel Holland over Christmas and the prospect of becoming Doncaster's first world boxing champion could set him up for life.
The brilliant bantamweight said: "I didn't fight my best but I was determined not blow it and let everything slip away."
