DEAN Winstanley has revealed how he and Raymond Van Barneveld “beat each other up” on the dartboard in preparation for the PDC World Championships.

The Conisbrough ace, who defeated Mervyn King 3-2 in a thrilling first round contest on Tuesday night, took part in a three-day training marathon at the former world champion’s studio last week.

It served Winstanley well as he won a topsy-turvy tie break against King to set up a second round clash with either Vincent van der Voort or Stuart Kellett.

Winstanley said: “I got a phone call last month from Barney’s agent asking if I’d be interested, and of course I was.

“He’s prepared me for what I have to do. The man is amazing, but I pushed him all the way.

“There were no phones, no women and no family. It was the most enjoyable three days of my life.

“We played two sessions a day, for four or five hours, and each time I came back to the hotel dripping in sweat,” he added.

“We basically beat each other up for three days.”

Winstanley’s Alexandra Palace debut appeared to be heading for a premature end when he trailed 2-0 to King in the deciding set.

But ‘Over The Top’ shrugged off several missed doubles to take the stand out match of the round into a tie break, which he went on to win 6-4.

Winstanley will meet either van der Voort or Kellett, who play tonight, in the second round on Sunday afternoon.
