It was just over two years ago that Doncaster’s Jason Cunningham started his professional career against Sheffield’s Anwar Alfadli, in a six rounder.
Just eight fights later, he finds himself contesting the English bantamweight title, tonight, at Doncaster Dome.
The speed of his rise up the ranks may have something to do with a lack of quality competition in the weight class. He has now boxed Alfadi three times and Delroy Spencer twice. But no one can cock a snoop at his 100% win record, even if he is yet to register a knockout.
The 24 year old will hope to achieve that this evening, against Scott Gladwin, from Halifax. Gladwin has lost two of eight fights, although he can clearly go the distance, his last fight was a 10-round Central Area super flyweight title win over Connor Nixon, from nearby Hatfield.
n Meanwhile Amir Khan has derided the quality of Kell Brook’s next opponent, Mexican Alvaro Robles.
Khan tweeted: ‘You need to step up ur opponents instead of facing Robles who no 1 has heard of, Does he even box?”
