Shooting star Jess Wright is targeting a spot at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia after winning his first senior title.

The 21-year-old, from Adwick-le-Street, represented Great Britain at the World Compak Championships in Estonia last year before taking a break from the sport to focus on his studies at Sheffield Hallam University.

But he returned to action in March this year and hit 96 out of 100 to win gold in the senior category of the UK COMPAK Championships, held at St Dials shooting ground in Wales.

“I took a sabbatical from shooting to focus on my Chemistry degree, which I gained with honours,” said Jess.

“I am now training with the Outwood Grange Academy Trust, who have shown me great support throughout my shooting career from my very first national competition in 2012, to become a teacher.

“I resumed competing in March, taking the big step up into the senior category.

“Unfortunately I missed out on the senior Great Britain team this year by one place. But to win my first major competition at senior level is something I’m obviously really pleased about.”

He added: “I’ve been offered the chance to receive coaching in an Olympic discipline, which is not my normal discipline.

“I aim to start this training this month with the goal of getting to the Commonwealth Games and possibly onto the Olympic Games.”

Wright played for Brodsworth Welfare in the Central Midlands League until a back injury curtailed his football career at a young age.

His father Adrian introduced him to shooting - and his rise to the top has happened in quick time.

In 2014 he won six Yorkshire titles, five North of England crowns, two English golds and one British title.

The following year saw him win two caps for Great Britain’s juniors. Wright was also part of the silver medal-winning GB junior team at the 2015 World Compak Championships in Estonia.

He also won the World All-Round Junior Championships held in Wales last year.
