Sheffield students take 2017 Head of the River honours

A record number of crews braved bitterly cold conditions on the River Don at this year's South Yorkshire Head of the River race.

Top honours went to an eight from Sheffield University who completed the uncompromising 4km course in a time of 13 minutes and 53 seconds.

Home wins for Doncaster Rowing club were achieved by Amy Scott in the Women’s Junior 16 single and Sam Pogmore, Stefan Panetta-Hirst, Ben Whitaker, George Murch with cox Katie Scott in the Junior 15 coxed quad.

Other notable home performances came from the Masters coxless quad of Josh Cantrill, Dan Jones, Brian Smith and Ed Bradley who achieved a time of 15 minutes 21 seconds.

Doncaster Rowing Club captain Adam Manson said: “I’d like to thank all the volunteers from Doncaster and City of Sheffield Rowing clubs for all their hard work in making this event happen.

“Also I’d like to thank all the crews and clubs who attended in arctic conditions for supporting the race.”
