Hill House School’s under 11s hockey team are now officially the third best in the north of England.
After being crowned South Yorkshire champions, a successful day at the North West finals saw the Hill House girls qualify to play in the Northern Finals of the National Hockey Championships at Leeds University.
They started the day slowly with a 1-0 defeat against Lancashire champions Kirkham Grammar School.
Driven on by Doncaster Hockey Club pair Daisy Bennett and Isabel Kell, the girls defeated Humber champions Hymers College 4-0.
Needing to at least draw their final group match, the Doncaster girls delivered an impressive display to defeat Wakefield Girls 2-0, with Evie Sprenger and Isobel Flanagan terrorising the opposition’s defence.
In the semi-final the Auckley girls then dominated against Kings School of Macclesfield before succumbing to a breakaway goal which gave the Cheshire champions a 1-0 victory.
In the bronze medal match Hill House ran out comfortable winners against Newcastle Royal Grammar School.
Coach Mick Hague said: “The team rose to the occasion magnificently and played some superb attacking hockey.
“They were the top scorers in the competition and just fell to a sucker punch in the semi-final.
“To have one of our school teams among the very best few in the whole of the north is great news both for Hill House and for Doncaster Hockey Club.”
n Joe Morrison bagged a hat trick as Doncaster’s men rounded off their season with a 3-2 win at University of Durham.
The victory secured a third place finish for the Town Field men following last year’s promotion back to the EHL Conference North.
Doncaster’s ladies beat Didsbury Northern 6-2 but are set to miss out on promotion. They need to beat Brooklands Poynton by 26 clear goals in their final game this weekend to overturn leaders Springfields.
