Durham University rower Eve Newton won Championship Gold in the women’s coxless fours at the British Universities and Colleges Sport 2013 Regatta at the National Watersport Centre in Nottingham on Monday.

Former Hall Cross School pupil Newton, of Bessacarr, took up rowing as a fresher four years ago.

The 22-year-old will now compete at the Student European Championships in Poland.

She is due to graduate next month with a Bsc in Natural Sciences and after a summer spent teaching horse riding in the USA will take up a post teaching psychology and coaching rowing and hockey at a school in Oxford.
