Rust can burn off his rivals when he takes the plunge at Ayr.

Ann Duffield’s four-year-old is a pretty useful animal on his day, and is deserving of recognition in division one of the Racing UK Anywhere Available Now Handicap.

The gelded son of Elnadim was a plucky winner at Catterick in July, but things have since not gone his way.

Fortune most notably deserted him at Hamilton a week ago, when he went down by a neck to Funding Deficit over eight and a half furlongs.

Despite having been sent on his way at odds of 20-1, Rust was not without support that day, which suggests his time is near.

It was not to be at Hamilton, though, as his path was cruelly blocked inside the final furlong, after which he had to be switched wide for a run.

Whether he would have won is open for debate, but that scrimmaging obviously cost him valuable momentum at a crucial point in the race.

Rust remains just 4lb higher than when he won at Catterick, with Duffield’s decision to revert to seven furlongs hardly an outlandish move given previous exploits.

The likelihood of fast ground can also be viewed upon as a significant positive.

Ayr regular Jinky is a worthy ally for the Racing UK Android App racinguk.com Handicap.

Linda Perratt’s six-year-old has won twice at the Scottish circuit and was a big eyecatcher over this course and distance a fortnight ago.

The John Murphy-owned gelding may have finished last in a six-runner handicap over five furlongs, but he flew home once the cause was lost and only went down by four lengths.

With the handicapper having taken off another 1lb for this, Jinky is now considerably lower in the weights than when he won at this track last July.

The reappointment of Joe Fanning, who rides Ayr better than most, also takes the eye for a horse who is extremely versatile in terms of going.

National Service turned in an interesting effort at Sandown on his most recent visit to the races and could be one of the sharper arrows shooting for Wolverhampton glory.
