Buonarroti has yet to really find his stride for Declan Carroll but his most recent effort suggests he is one for the shortlist in the William Hill Handicap (for The Kilkerran Cup) on the opening day of Ayr’s Western meeting.

This son of Galileo was trained by Aidan O’Brien for his first couple of seasons, with his fifth behind Kingston Hill in the 2013 Racing Post Trophy suggesting he might have a good 2014 as a three-year-old.

However, he was limited to just three starts last term and found thoroughly wanting in Listed company, so he was duly shipped out of Ballydoyle over the winter months.

O’Brien’s loss could be Carroll’s gain though as after a mediocre start to life with the Malton handler, Buonarroti now seems to be finding his feet judged on his second to Penhill at Haydock last time.

A steady drop through the ratings from a starting point of 97 in May saw him line up off 86 at the Merseyside venue where he showed plenty of resolution in making up ground late in the race to be beaten just half a length.

The handicapper has put him back up 2lb for that performance but Buonarroti remains more than capable off such a perch and it appears to be a matter of time until he gets his head in front.

Zaina Rizeena impressed in her recent win at Beverley and should go well again in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes.

Alcaeus is a fascinating contender in the Dan Hague Rails Bookmaker Handicap at Yarmouth.

A six-times previous winner, he will be having his first start in well over a year in this one-mile-six-furlong event but he certainly should not be ruled out, not least because he hails from the yard of Sir Mark Prescott.

Alcaeus was last sighted when chasing home the reopposing Hassle on what turned out to be his only start of 2014.

Clearly such a lengthy break is far from ideal but given he was beaten just a head on that occasion, he appears to run well fresh and it could be dangerous to ignore him.
