Foxtrot Romeo’s winning record does not make for particularly pretty reading, but he can double his tally with victory in the Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager Handicap at Doncaster.

To point out he has notched just one win in two starts is possibly a little harsh as he mixed it in decent company as a juvenile and opened his three-year-old campaign with a second-place finish in the 2012 Irish 2,000 Guineas.

That has been the pinnacle of the five-year-old’s career so far, though, as he slid down the handicap after three so-so efforts for Johnny Murtagh last term before switching to the care of Marco Botti this year.

While the Newmarket handler has hardly set the world alight with this recruit, Foxtrot Romeo has shown up well in a handful of competitive events and only narrowly failed to strike at Wolverhampton last month.

That run inspired connections to send him for the Silver Cup at Ayr and he posted a creditable effort in fourth, keeping on well in the closing stages without really looking like winning.

The handicapper has left him alone following that run and having shown previously that good ground is his forte, Foxtrot Romeo could finally be positioned to strike gold for the first time since August 2011.

There are two interesting divisions of the Universal Recycling British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, with Sir Michael Stoute’s Yarrow a likely type in division one.

A half-sister to Golan and Tartan Bearer, she will doubtless show her best form next term, but she put up a taking performance to finish second behind Forte at Kempton on her first outing, suggesting she could be smart enough to open her account before the end of the year.

The winner was not disgraced when unplaced in the Fillies’ Mile last week and the way Yarrow picked off a number of rivals in the straight offers much for the future.

Figment is the pick in the second division after showing plenty of promise on her racecourse debut.
