Epworth Ladies made amends for the previous week’s reverse to Milladies by inflicting a first defeat of the season on Fusion, winning 14-6.
On paper Division One opponents Fusion would provide an even stiffer test than Milladies so the home team knew they had their work cut out.
However, from the outset it became clear it was going to be a gruelling end to end battle with neither team allowing the other room for error.
Captain Loraine Roberts won the toss and elected to take the first centre pass to get the match underway.
Out of her usual position in defence, Sam Croxall teamed up with Roberts to play WA.
Both centre court attacking players proved too strong and clever for their opposition, beating them to the ball and intercepting passes turning Epworth back onto the attack.
Shooting for Epworth Lauren Kiddle GA and Jo Douglas GS worked well around the circle to create many scoring opportunities.
However, much to their frustration they failed to convert the majority of their chances, although they did just enough to keep their team marginally ahead throughout the match.
The outstanding players on both teams were without doubt the defenders, hence the unusually low final score.
GK Kirstie Hinds, GD Erika Phoenix and WD Natalie totally dominated the defensive third for Epworth.
The opposition’s attack were subjected to constant pressure from the defenders who were just too quick, not allowing them to make any impact on the game.
So strong and determined were the Epworth defenders that in the second half of the match the Fusion shooters managed to score just one goal.
Player of the match: Kirstie Hinds.
