DONCASTER Mustangs slipped to a first defeat of the season on Sunday when they lost in agonising fashion 14-13 to rivals Yorkshire Rams.
The home side made a sluggish start and gave themselves a mountain to climb as the Rams, who possessed a strong running game, took a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Doncaster got on the scoresheet in the next period following a Rams fumble on their own 15-yard line, allowing Sam Broughton to sweep into the endzone with Martin Pepper adding the extra point.
Pepper then took Graham Lightfoot’s pass for an electrifying 45-yard score in the third quarter to bring the home side to within a point of the Rams but the subsequent two-point play fell half a yard shy.
The Mustangs face East Kilbride Pirates this Sunday at the Keepmoat Stadium athletics arena (2.30pm).
