Thorne fighter Danny Mitchell is pledging to entertain when he makes his first step onto the mixed martial arts main stage.

The 27-year-old will realise a dream in March when he competes for the first time under the banner of the world’s most regonisable promotional name in MMA, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Submission specialist Mitchell says his style is perfect for fans wanting to see an entertaining bout when he meets Igor Araujo at the O2 Arena in London on March 8.

“I think my style is a little bit different,” Mitchell said.

“I am a submission fighter; I’ll just jump for stuff.

“I can lose two rounds and then tap a guy.

“I think it’s a more exciting style of grappling.

“Just getting a takedown and holding the guy down might win you the fight, but it’s not really winning the fans.

“By having a constant attacking style, it’s much better for the viewers.

“Especially in this day and age, we’re trying to educate people about how grappling is an art form.”

For those well educated in the growing sport of MMA, Mitchell has been marked out as an up-and-coming British fighter.

In his 19 fights to date, Mitchell has won 14, ending 12 bouts early.

His aggressive pursuit of a submission victory helped him overcome the odds to beat Sweden’s strong striker Besam Yousef in Gothenburg using a rear naked choke.

Such eye-catching victories attracted the attention of UFC bosses and Mitchell – known as the Cheesecake Assassin – is aiming to keep them interested beyond March 8.

He said: “I just want to have a crazy fight.

“I want to try and showcase as much as I’ve got; striking, wrestling and grappling.

“I’m not going to hold anything back.

“A lot of people try and play it safe in that first UFC fight, but I’m just going to be trying to go for that win the whole time, by knockout or submission.”
