BESSACARR’S Barry Middleton scored but Great Britain slumped to a hefty 8-1 defeat to Spain in their must-win Champions Trophy final group match.
The defeat ensured Britain cannot finish in the top four places in the tournament which is being held in New Zealand and will now contest places five to eight in a second group stage.
Middleton put Britain ahead midway through the first half but Spain responded with four goals either side of the break.
Britain opened the tournament, which sits behind the Olympics and World Cup in terms of importance, with a 2-1 victory over Pakistan but were then beaten 4-1 by world champions Australia.
The results in New Zealand are a blow to Britain’s Olympic hopes with the Champions Trophy being the final ranking tournament before the 2012 Games.
