Epworth Ladies Hockey Club paid for a poor first half as they went down 3-1 to Leeds.

Epworth really struggled in the first half, and were unable to keep Leeds out of their attacking half.

Leeds took advantage and dominated from the start, putting Epworth’s defence under pressure which produced the first goal after 10 minutes.

Leeds continued to dominate and although Helen Lightburn and Izzy Sterling did make a couple of breaks up front to get the ball moving the other way, Leeds’ defence were too strong and cleared the attacks.

Leeds pushed forward once again and won a penalty corner. Epworth were quick out but Leeds scored their second goal of the game with an excellent strike at the top of the D.

Leeds’ third came a couple of minutes before half time.

Epworth started the second half in determined amood and had some fantastic play- linking passes.

Epworth’s defence kept Leeds out of the D with Fiona Chester and Cath Eade making some crucial tackles to get the ball back in the attacking half.

Epworth missed a fantastic opportunity with Parking making a great run up the pitch crossing into the D but the keeper saved.

Epworth won a penalty corner but couldn’t convert and this was cleared by Leeds. Epworth’s defence was caught out having to chase back up the pitch but Sarah Peach in goal made a fantastic diving save to keep them out.

Epworth again pushed forward and Alex Robinson in the centre made a fantastic run up the pitch, taking on three defenders, before scoring for Epworth.

Epworth continued to dominate the second half, keeping Leeds out of their D and the ball in the attacking half, but unfortunately they just couldn’t level the scores.

The umpire’s player of the match was Helen Lightburn while Alex Robinson won the players’ player award.
